🏛️ Building a Stronger Foundation - OkiJALT's New Advisory Boards

Experience never retires. Okinawa JALT is formalizing four distinct advisory and leadership boards to draw on the wisdom of past leaders, build bridges with local universities, and elevate our chapter's academic standing.

This proposal, submitted by President Norman Fewell, creates a layered advisory structure that keeps experienced voices engaged without giving them decision-making authority. All boards are purely advisory - supporting the elected Executive Board while bringing invaluable perspective and prestige to our chapter.

The Four Proposed Boards

🌟 01 - Presidential Council
Mentorship - Continuity - Awards

Composed of all former Okinawa JALT Presidents, this council provides high-level mentorship to the sitting President, safeguards leadership continuity across terms, and serves as the selection body for the chapter's Lifetime Achievement Award.
💼 02 - Executive Council
Strategic Advisory - Operations

Composed of former elected Executive Officers - including past Treasurers and Membership Chairs - this council offers seasoned, practical guidance on chapter operations, event planning, and governance drawn from the lived experience of past leadership roles.
🎓 03 - Intercollegiate Advisory Board
University Partnerships - Outreach

One designated faculty representative from each major university and higher education institution in Okinawa. This board bridges the chapter and local higher education, facilitating on-campus promotion, supporting presenter recruitment for conferences, and fostering academic collaboration and research partnerships.
🌏 04 - Honorary Board of Advisers
Prestige - Long-Term Vision

Composed of Professors Emeriti, distinguished scholars, and community leaders who have made significant contributions to language education in Okinawa. Members champion Okinawa JALT within the wider academic community and provide counsel on enduring educational initiatives and strategic direction.

Important: Advisory Only

All four boards are strictly advisory. They may offer advice on operations, strategic direction, publications, awards, and partnerships. The Executive Board gives due consideration to their input but is not bound by it. No advisory board can initiate, decide, or finally approve any chapter decision.

This structure draws on the best of our past while keeping decision-making authority firmly with the elected officers accountable to our members - a clean, democratic, and effective approach to governance.
