🌱 Growing Our Community - New Membership Options Coming!
Okinawa JALT is opening its doors wider than ever before. A new membership diversification initiative proposes flexible tiers that make participation accessible to everyone - from students just starting out to retired educators with decades of experience.
Our current membership structure may unintentionally limit participation from key groups. The new proposal, submitted by President Norman Fewell for Executive Board review, introduces five new membership pathways designed to meet people where they are.
Proposed Membership Tiers
🎓 Student Membership - Significantly Reduced / Free (volunteer option)
Reduced fees to lower the financial barrier for student participation. Students who volunteer as conference or event staff may qualify for a complimentary membership, creating a mutually beneficial relationship between the chapter and the next generation of educators.

🌅 Retiree / Gold Membership (65+) - Free
Complimentary membership for educators aged 65 and above. Retirees bring a wealth of knowledge and professional experience to our community. Many choose to volunteer their time and expertise in return.

💻 Digital-Only / Online Membership - ¥5,000 / year
A cost-effective option for members who live abroad or cannot travel to Okinawa. Digital members are invited to submit pre-recorded presentations for our three major annual conferences, which are shared across YouTube, our website, and other platforms.

💎 Lifetime Membership - Premium (fee TBD)
A premium tier offering permanent membership status. The fee will be determined through a cost-benefit analysis, providing a meaningful one-time financial contribution to the chapter while rewarding long-term supporters.

Additional Plans
Targeted Outreach Campaign - A focused recruitment effort aimed at past and lapsed members, university students, ALTs, JETs, and retirees to rebuild and diversify our membership base.
Welcome Packets & Mentorship Pairings - Personalized onboarding materials and experienced mentor pairings to foster a sense of belonging and long-term engagement from day one.

These proposals are currently under Executive Board review. Once approved, new membership tiers will be introduced within 60 days. Watch this space for updates - and if you know someone who has been on the fence about joining, now might be the perfect time to tell them!
