About Okinawa JALT

🌺 Who We Are - Language Teaching in Paradise

Okinawa JALT Global Summit 2026
We are language educators, researchers, and enthusiasts who have chosen one of the most beautiful islands in Asia as our home - and our classroom. Welcome to Okinawa JALT.

Our Story

Okinawa JALT has been active since 1980 - making us one of the longest-running JALT chapters in Japan. For 45 years, we have brought together language educators from across the Ryukyu Islands and around the world, united by a passion for improving how languages are taught and learned.

We are part of JALT - the Japan Association for Language Teaching - Asia's largest language education organization with approximately 3,000 members, 31 chapters, and 24 Special Interest Groups (SIGs) nationwide. As the southernmost chapter in Japan, Okinawa JALT has always had a distinctive character - shaped by the islands' bilingual heritage, its international military and academic community, and the warm, open spirit of Ryukyuan culture.

Our Island Community

Teaching in Okinawa is unlike anywhere else in Japan. The islands sit at a unique crossroads - Japanese and Ryukyuan culture, a significant international military presence, a growing tourist industry, and a cluster of universities with diverse student populations. This creates teaching contexts and challenges that are genuinely unique, and Okinawa JALT exists to help educators navigate and thrive in this environment.

Our membership spans the full range - ALTs just arriving in Japan, veteran university professors, JET participants, private school teachers, graduate students, and retired educators who continue contributing decades of wisdom to our community.

A New Chapter - Literally

The 2025-26 administration has hit the ground running. In the first two weeks alone: six major executive proposals approved, two international conferences planned, a new constitution drafted, two presenter databases compiled and shared with all JALT chapters nationally, a new journal announced, and a full rebrand launched. This newsletter is part of that momentum - and there is much more to come.
