π₯ The 56th Naha Great Tug-of-War - A Festival Like No Other
What Is the Naha Tug-of-War?
The Naha Otsunahiki (ι£θ¦ε€§ηΆ±ζ½γΎγ€γ) is the world's largest tug-of-war. That is not a figure of speech - it holds an official Guinness World Record. The main rope is 200 meters long, weighs 43 tons, and requires 15,000 people on both ends to pull. It draws over 270,000 participants and spectators to central Naha every year.
And it is UNESCO recognized. In 2000, the Naha Tug-of-War was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list - one of the most prestigious cultural distinctions in the world. This is a 600-year-old tradition of prayers for harvest and prosperity, alive and thriving in the streets of modern Naha.
The Festival Weekend - Day by Day
Why This Makes Our Conference Special
The Okinawa JALT Global Summit 2026 is scheduled for October 9-11 deliberately to coincide with this festival. For presenters and attendees traveling from outside Okinawa, this means your conference trip becomes a full cultural immersion - language education by day, one of Asia's great living traditions by evening and weekend.
You will attend workshops and presentations alongside scholars from across Japan and the world, then step outside into a city buzzing with Ryukyuan culture, traditional music, street food, and the kind of communal energy that only a centuries-old festival can generate.
One Important Warning
We cannot stress this enough. Naha hotels fill up weeks - sometimes months - in advance during the festival weekend. Prices rise sharply as the event approaches. If you are planning to attend the conference or the festival, secure your accommodation now, before you even submit your proposal. Hotels on and around Kokusai-dori are the most convenient. The Yui Rail monorail connects the airport and most central hotels easily.
